Depending on the time of day, Rajon Rondo is either the leader and future of the Celtics, or the latest trade bait.

That's been the case for quite some time with the All-Star point guard.

But Celtics GM Danny Ainge, speaking on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich, shed a little light on how he and the organization feel about Rondo with the C's.

“We did talk to Rondo about extending him,” Ainge said. “But that’s all part of the negotiation that will happen again this summer and most likely the summer after. I don’t know, time will tell.”

While the C's did talk about it, it doesn't sound like the sides had any real expectations of getting something done at that time.

“In the Collective Bargaining Agreement, there are limits on what can and can’t be done. Really it’s not that Rondo doesn’t want to accept an extension, as much as it’s just not financially very smart for him to accept an extension right now,” said Ainge. “I didn’t think he would [sign], but we did try.”

When it does come time for Rondo to sign on the dotted line, Ainge expects it to be for a hefty sum. There will be competition that will drive up the price.

"Yeah, I think that Rondo will demand quite a bit in the open market," Ainge said. "The competition for Rondo in free agency at that time will be very high."

Ainge was then asked if it was his priority to sign Rondo and keep him on the Celtics. That's where Ainge decided that all the contract talk was enough.

"Well listen, I never want to discuss negotiations in the media. So, I think we've said enough."
