There were the laughs and good-natured ribbing back and forth between teammates, and Brad Marchand joking that he never knew that Rich Peverley had such a funny shaped head. But all the laughs and chirping was for a great cause as 17 of Shawn Thornton’s Bruins teammates headed to Royale on Monday afternoon to get their heads shaved to raise money for the Sixth Annual “Cuts for a Cause” to benefit the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center and pediatric cancer care.

Thornton and his teammates raised a record $76,000 when all of the donations and proceeds were tallied, and the Bruins enforcer was beaming with pride after teaming with Toucher and Rich, the Bruins Foundation, 98.5 the Sports Hub and his own Thornton Foundation to create such a worthwhile event for a great cause.

The event raised $20,000 more than last year’s event even though it was going up against Red Sox Opening Day at the exact same time.

“To remember what this event came from six years ago, and to see how much bigger and better its grown each year has been really rewarding for me,” said Thornton. “I’m also really proud that all 24 members of the team contributed. Eighteen players showed up to get their heads shaved, and guys like Patrice Bergeron and Tyler Seguin made personal donations even though they couldn’t make it today.

“It shows what a tight team that we have, and how much these guys all care about helping out those less fortunate than them.”

Two hundred VIP tickets and 450 general admission tickets were sold for the event, and Royale was packed with Bruins fans for the second straight season. All proceeds earned will be donated to the Shawn Thornton Foundation, the Boston Bruins Foundation and Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.
