Carl Soderberg finally returned to the practice ice for an optional morning skate on Thursday, but he obviously won’t be in the lineup for Thursday night’s tilt against the Colorado Avalanche. Soderberg has been out nearly two weeks with an ankle injury suffered in the preseason finale against the Winnipeg Jets in Saskatoon, and will have missed at least the first three games of the regular season.

“I think it’s a start. He has skated enough own his own since Monday, and at least doing some line rushes and other stuff,” said Claude Julien. “He is progressing well, but obviously isn’t ready to play.

“He’ll start practicing with us, but how much contact he can take is another thing. Our trainers will give us the word on that tomorrow morning.”

David Krejci and Milan Lucic were both missing from the ice for the morning skate at TD Garden after practicing for three straight days, but they’ll be on the ice against the Avs. Jordan Caron is expected to continue skating in Soderberg’s place as the left wing on the third line, and there aren’t any other anticipated changes for the Black and Gold taking on a Colorado bunch that has jumped out to a 3-0-0 start to the season.

Here are the line combos and D-pairings based on the pregame skate and this week’s practices in Wilmington:
