For something completely different: The Wall Street Journal chronicles the media turning into cheerleaders at the Olympics. Part of the issue here is that the non-cheering in the press box mentality is something very North American. In many other parts of the world the media routinely gets out their pom-poms and cheers for their athletes, and that explains why it would be very visibly present at a world event like the Olympics. That explains why I once saw the Japanese media shower Daisuke Matsuzaka with a birthday cake, gifts and a singing of Happy Birthday in the Red Sox clubhouse. Its seems odd to us, but it happens in a lot of other corners of the world.
