* Bruce Arthur has a pretty strong takedown of the conditions in Sochi that are awaiting media, and presumably fans, that are hoping to take in the Winter Olympics.
* John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports that the Sabres and Bruins discussed a Thomas Vanek-for-Tyler Seguin trade, and a B’s source tells that it never got post the tire-kicking stage between the two teams before Seguin was eventually dealt to Dallas.

* Here's an injury update on the Olympic athletes headed to Sochi, including Steve Stamkos eying a Saturday return prior to the Olympic break and Marian Gaborik as a long shot for a return.

* Speaking of Thomas Vanek, he turned down an offer from the Islanders for a substantial contract extension and it appears he’ll be headed to another NHL destination prior to the March 5 deadline.

* Matt Hendricks helps the Oilers grind out a win against the Buffalo Sabres. That’s for all the stat geeks out there that didn’t see any upside to Edmonton acquiring the gritty center.
* PHT writer and FOH (friend of Haggs) Mike Halford says that Tim Thomas is willing to entertain thoughts of re-signing with the Florida Panthers. He must having some fun in the sun.
* For something completely different: Some interesting insight into Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s process toward becoming Lester Bangs in “Almost Famous” as told by Cameron Crowe.
