BOSTON -- It was only a matter of time before Jarome Iginla was recognized for the torrid month of March he’s been putting on for the Boston Bruins, and he was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week for the period ending on March 23. Iginla finished behind Gustav Nyquist and Henrik Lundqvist for top honors, but has had few peers during the Bruins 12-game winning streak.
Iginla scored five goals last week including two-goal games against the Minnesota Wild on March 17 and Colorado Avalanche on March 22, and has scored an eye-popping 11 goals during Boston’s epic winning streak. The two goals against the Avs pushed Iginla past Bruins Hall of Famer Johnny Bucyk for 25th on the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring list with his 558th goal of his career.
“I feel very fortunate to have gotten the chance to play with [David Krejci] and [Milan Lucic] through the season, and go through the ups and downs while working through it,” said Iginla. “I’ve definitely felt more comfortable as the year is going on, and getting more used to the system. I feel like I’m not really thinking things through as much now, and I’m just reacting naturally.”
Iginla now sits two goals behind Guy Lafleur for 24th all-time with 560 career goals. Iginla was also the Third Start of the Week for the week ending Feb. 9, and is first on the Bruins with 28 goals while ranking second in points (58) and third in assists (30).
In the month of March, Iginla has tallied 11 goals, including three two-goal games (Mar. 13 vs. Phoenix, Mar. 15 vs. Carolina and Mar. 22 at Phoenix) and four game-winning goals (Mar. 4 at Florida, Mar. 13 vs. Phoenix, Mar. 15 vs. Carolina, Mar. 18 vs. New Jersey) during the B’s current 12-game win streak. Iginla has also chipped in three assists, totaling 14 points in March with four games still to go to complete the month of March.
One would expect there might just be some Player of the Month honors coming Iginla's way when March finally does come to an end.
