BOSTON -- It created a bit of an odd juxtaposition that he was a healthy scratch on Thursday night, but 19-year-old rookie defenseman Dougie Hamilton was named the Bruins Seventh Player Award winner prior to the victory over  the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.

The award was voted on by fans online at

It’s an annual award presented to the Bruins player who went above and beyond the call of duty and exceeded the expectations of fans this season. There was plenty of sentiment that fourth-line winger Daniel Paille or backup goaltender Anton Khudobin would make fine Seventh Player Award recipients given their outstanding seasons in supporting roles, but the award has become a popularity contest in recent years with Tyler Seguin (2012), Brad Marchand (2011), Tuukka Rask (2010), David Krejci (2009) and Milan Lucic (2008) winning the award over the past five seasons.

Hamilton has five goals and 11 assists in 42 games for the Bruins this season with a plus-6 rating, and ranks second among Bruins defensemen in points (16) and goals (five). The 19-year-old is tied for third in the NHL among rookie defensemen in points (16), assists (11) and goals (5) after starting the season skating for the Niagara IceDogs during the lockout.

Despite all of this, Hamilton has been scratched a handful of times over the past few weeks, and would appear to be a realistic candidate to start the playoffs as a healthy scratch. Wade Redden is fitting in as a capable, steady, tough left-handed shot with Dennis Seidenberg, Johnny Boychuk and Adam McQuaid are fitting in on the right side of the six-man unit.

Hamilton wasn’t around after the game on Thursday night to discuss winning the award. In addition to the award, Hamilton will receive $5,000 to donate to his charity of choice.
