TORONTO Achieving the highest level of success in the NHL comes with plenty of things: honor, accolades and prestige. General manager Peter Chiarelli, the architect of the Boston Bruins, is getting all of those things.
On Monday, he was named one of the assistant GMs for Team Canada in their upcoming entry into the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships this summer.
Team Canada announced on Monday that it has extended their current agreement with Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman to remain as Executive Director for Team Canada through 2013-14. The former Detroit Red Wings great will be in charge of whichever team Canada sends to Russia for the 2014 winter games in Sochy after putting together the memorable Gold Medal squad that included Patrice Bergeron in 2010.
There has been no determination made if the NHL players will again take part in the Olympics, and thats expected to be a significant bargaining chip when Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr begin haggling over the NHLs Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Yzerman will be assisted by a management group that includes NHL GMs Doug Armstrong (St. Louis), Kevin Lowe (Edmonton) and Ken Holland (Detroit), along with Hockey Canada officials Bob Nicholson and Brad Pascal.
Lowe will be the GM for the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship entry from Canada, and will be assisted by Chiarelli along with Toronto Maple Leafs assistant GM Dave Nonis.
"I am very pleased with the group that we have assembled to lead us through the next two seasons," Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson said in a release announcing the appointments. "Steve, Doug, Ken and Kevin provide a great deal of experience gained from their involvement in 2010 and their long-time involvement with our program.
"Brad has been with Hockey Canada since 1998 and brings a wealth of international experience to the group, having led Canada at the IIHF World Championship, IIHF World Women's Championship and IIHF World Junior Championship. Peter and Dave have great experience as well that will benefit the group as we prepare for this year's world championship.
The 2012 World Championships will be held in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland, from May 4-17, with Canada based in Helsinki for the entire event.
