Gregory Campbell’s heroic act of finishing a shift on what turned out to be a broken leg, sustained when he blocked an Evgeni Malkin shot, will forever be one of the highlights of the latest Bruins playoff run.
But where does Campbell’s shift rank in Boston sports lore? Gary Tanguay, Andy Gresh, and Bob Ryan talked about it on UNO Sports Tonight, all acknowledging the fact that hockey is “its own animal” while trying to find a situation similar to what we saw with Campbell Wednesday night. Ryan was able to fish out an instance from the Larry Bird archives.
“Bird hitting his floor against the Pacers may be one,” said Ryan. “And the whole drama of it and there’s such great video of him trotting back onto the floor, and then he comes out and scores 32 points as I recall.”
