In a sign that perhaps Johnny Boychuk isn’t ready to return to the ice, the Bruins have called up rookie defenseman Torey Krug from the Providence Bruins. Krug got off to a slow start this season for the P-Bruins because of a nagging ankle issue, but he’s turned it on with 10 goals and 24 assists in 55 games overall for Providence while serving as one of the hottest offensive defenseman in the league in the second half of the season.
Krug is fourth on the P-Bruins in points and ranks sixth among all defensemen in the American Hockey League.
It’s his first recall this season, but Krug appeared in a pair of games with the Bruins last season after signing as an undrafted free agent from Michigan State. Krug should join fellow Providence alumni Matt Bartkowski in the lineup unless one of them ends up being scratched because they’re being mentioned in possible trade talks.
Krug, Bartkowski and Jordan Caron are among a number of Bruins prospects that are being mentioned prominently in trade discussions with teams around the NHL prior to the April 3 trade deadline.
