WILMINGTON -- Johnny Boychuk estimated he got about three hours of sleep in a pull-out chair in the wee hours of Monday morning, but it was all worth it after watching the birth of his twin daughters. Boychuk missed Saturday’s California road trip finale vs. the Sharks to be with his wife for the birth of their twins, and a weekend-long labor finally saw them born into the world on Monday at 2:27 and 2:57 a.m.

Boychuk went straight to Monday morning practice at Ristuccia Arena from Mass General Hospital, and was both exhausted and exhilarated after witnessing the miracle of life.

He wasn’t ready to reveal the names, but was ecstatic that wife and the couple’s first babies were happy and healthy after a long weekend. The B’s defenseman was appreciative that the team was able to send him back to Boston, so he could be with his wife for the all-important family moment.

“A lot of guys on our team have families, and it’s important to show that family is always first,” said Boychuk. “We thought it might come quick, but it didn’t. They’re here now, and that’s all that matters.”

Boychuk will get plenty of family time over the next 24 hours with the Bruins in need of his services tomorrow night against the Maple Leafs. Then the team is scheduled to go right back on the road against the Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks, and Boychuk will go with them because the NHL regular season schedule waits for no one.
