‘Satch' nickname suits Sullinger's dad

ALLSTONJared Sullinger's father James is known by most as Satch Sullinger. It would be a good story if it had something to do with former Celtics great Satch Sanders.

The nickname actually came from Satch Sullinger's father Harold, who played for an all-black barnstorming team called the Sioux City Ghosts in the 1930s.

Back then, everyone had a nickname of some sort.

For Harold Sullinger and his massively large hands, he was given the nickname of "Suitcase" Sullinger.

"They used to say it looked like he had suitcases on the end of his arms," James recalled.

And with James being his oldest son, well everyone knows what goes with a suitcase, right?

A satchel.

And so, just like that, "Satch" Sullinger was born.

It doesn't stop there.

Satch Sullinger has a younger brother, Harold Jr., who played two seasons at Iowa and passed away in December.

Keeping with the family's luggage theme for nicknames, he was given the nickname "Briefcase" that was later shortened to just, "Brief."

The tradition of passing on the luggage-themed nicknames hasn't quite caught on with the next generation of Sullinger basketball players.

In an interview with ESPN in February, Jared, the Celtics' first-round draft pick from Ohio State, acknowledged he doesn't have one.

"If I was a girl," Jared Sullinger said, "I know I'd be Purse."
