Reports: Terry wants Mavs jersey retired; Cuban considers it

Jason Terry has made his intentions in Boston clear.

Earlier this month, the veteran guard inked the Celtics leprechaun holding the Larry OBrien championship trophy on his left arm. Last week he emphasized his commitment to winning a title this season.

Terry hasnt forgotten his previous eight seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, either. He won an NBA championship with the Mavs in 2011, in addition to being named the 2009 Sixth Man of the Year as a member of the team.

Before he kicks off his first season with the Celtics, Terry reflected on his time in Dallas, a period he would be pleased to see commemorated.

The bow was winning the championship, but the icing on the cake will be putting that jersey up in the rafters," Terry told the Star-Telegram. If it happens, Ill be grateful."

Terry averaged 17.5 points (47.8 FG) in 32.6 minutes off the bench during the Mavs 2011 title run. For his contributions that season and over the course of his career, Mavericks owner Marc Cuban has not ruled out the honor.

Although Terry chose to sign with the Celtics as a free agent this summer, Cuban appreciated his honesty during the process, according to ESPNDallas.com. After expressing his displeasure with Jason Kidds decision to join the New York Knicks, Cuban told ESPN Dallas Ben and Skin Show he would consider retiring Terrys jersey.

Putting somebody up in the rafters, thats something sacred in my mind, Cuban said. You dont just do it just to do it, to have a big ceremony, to sell tickets. You havent seen me decide yet. I go back and forth on Derek Harper all the time, but Harp will be up there before J. Kidd will. Ive always said my prerequisite was that you played on a championship team for the Mavs. Id say Jets got a shot, Dirks an obvious, but as of right now I wouldnt put J. Kidd up there.

Terry wore number 31 during his career with the Mavericks.
