Report: Celtics' Zarren takes self out of 76ers GM consideration

You wouldn't know him if he walked by you on the street, but Celtics assistant GM Mike Zarren is one of the most important individuals connected with the team.

Fortunately, he's sticking around.

Zarren was reportedly in the running for the 76ers GM job, but according to Paul Flannery of WEEI.com, he's removed his name from the pool of candidates and will remain with the Celtics.

Zarren is a lifelong Celtics fan who started as an intern and has worked his way up the ranks. He doesn't watch games in a fancy suite, or in the team's locker room though. He's up in the balcony utilizing his season tickets while wearing his vintage Celtics jersey, watching closely and taking it all in.

Zarren is also a regular at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Convention, held annually at MIT.

Here's what the site says about Zarren:

A lifelong Celtics fan and season ticket holder, Michael Zarren is now the Celtics Assistant General Manager and Team Counsel. Now in his ninth year with the team after starting as an unpaid intern, Mike is widely recognized as one of the leaders in the field of advanced statistical analysis of basketball players and teams, and is an important part of the teams strategic planning and player personnel evaluation processes. Mike is also the teams salary cap expert and lead in-house counsel, and is responsible for the development of new technologies for team use, including the teams statistical database and video archivedelivery system. Mike was previously a law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and a management consultant, during which time he performed econometric and other quantitative analyses for Fortune 500 firms across a wide variety of industries. Mike is a graduate of Harvard Law School (where he served as editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology) and of the University of Chicago.
