Friday Free Throws: Former Celtics Training Camp Edition

Share

Welcome to another edition of Friday Free Throws, a weekly recap of the most interesting news, notes, and information about the Boston Celtics that have not made the headlines but are still worth a read.

With the Boston Celtics currently in Europe for Training Camp, let's go around the league and take a look at what some former Celtics are up to this preseason:

Glen Davis: Orlando Magic

With Dwight Howard now on the Los Angeles Lakers, Glen Davis has emerged as the mouthpiece for the rebuilding Orlando Magic, which essentially guarantees a season of memorable quotes from the talkative forward.

When Howard was asked last season what Davis, then in his first year with the Magic, "brings to the table," he simply replied, "Food." Now it's Davis' turn to return the compliment. Asked what he will miss most about Howard, Davis answered,"his farting ability," the Orlando Sentinel's Josh Robbins tweeted.

Davis moved on to metaphors this week when discussing the state of his team. "Right now you've got to take one step at a time, just like a baby," Robbins reported. "A baby doesn't come out walking. A baby, he crawls first."

Tony Allen: Memphis Grizzlies

Once one of Celtics toughest defenders, Tony Allen has brought that mindset to the Grizzlies over the past two years. Now entering his third season in Memphis, the 2012 All-Defensive First Team member set the tone early in training camp. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported:

One of the livelier scenes happened when veteran guard Tony Allen celebrated after a defensive drill. Allen's team, the white squad, earned three consecutive stops.

"Get on my team if you want to win a defensive drill!" Allen yelled as he strutted around the gym.

And-one: Tony isn't the only member of the Allen family in training camp this season. His younger brother Ryan is in camp with the Chicago Bulls. Ryan is also Derrick Rose's roommate and has known Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau for years since his days as Celtics assistant coach when Tony was on the team. Kendrick Perkins: Oklahoma City Thunder

After undergoing surgery in July to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist, Kendrick Perkins could miss the the Thunder's entire preseason as he continues to recover. NewsOK.com reported General Manager Sam Presti said on Media Day, What we're trying to do is have him ready for the first game or the beginning of the regular season. His conditioning, his fitness and his levels, he's done a fantastic job. His wrist is a thing that we have to be very cautious with and we will be. Perkins also underwent surgery for a groin injury this offseason.

Greg Stiemsma: Minnesota Timberwolves

Greg Stiemsma battled plantar fasciitis in his left foot during his rookie year with the Celtics last season and will be limited during during camp because of it. According to the Star Tribune, Stieimsma will be limited in 5-on-5 play as a precautionary measure.

Sasha Pavlovic: Portland Trail Blazers

Sasha Pavlovic received praise from Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts during Media Day when describing the team's bench. Pavlovic is among veteran reserves whom Stotts believes will help his young team. "Sasha Pavlovic is another guy who is relatively young and has been in the NBA Finals," he said, according to BlazersEdge.com. "He's versatile, he can shoot, he can pass."
