Blakely: Rivers understands need to protect star player

A Yahoo! Sports article had Doc Rivers falling on the sword for the main reason Ray Allen left Boston for Miami in free agency. That is no surprise to CSNNE.com Celtics Insider A. Sherrod Blakely, who says one of Doc's best abilities as a coach is the way he manages player perception.

"Whether your believe Doc Rivers or not is irrelevant," Blakely said. "The fact of the matter is that he understands is the last thing he needs heading into the season is the perception out there that his star point guard is the reason Ray Allen is no longer a Boston Celtic."

So maybe Rivers is exaggerating his faults, maybe he's not. Either way, Rajon Rondo doesn't look like the bad guy who forced Allen out of town as far as some are concerned.
