Valentine responds to report on Pesky's funeral attendance

BOSTON -- Upon a report that only several Red Sox players attended Johnny Pesky's funeral, manager Bobby Valentine was asked if he was surprised more players didn't show up.

"You know, I think it's very insulting to the Pesky family for people to be thinking that an organization that loved him so much did anything other than the right thing," said Valentine before Thursday's game at Fenway Park. "That's my answer to that."

The Boston Herald reported earlier Thursday that just four current members of the Red Sox attended Pesky's funereal, and that some members of the Red Sox front office staff were disappointed in the poor showing.

The report also had most of the Sox attended Josh Beckett's charity "Beckett Bowl" that night.
