Valentine planning on activating Ortiz Friday

BOSTON -- David Ortiz ran the bases prior to Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park. Afterwards, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he's hopeful Ortiz will be activated on Friday.

"It looked like David got through everything perfectly today," said Valentine. "Today was the day he was going to run the bases, which he hadn't done yet. He had run sprints and has done other things. Today he ran the bases. We'll see how he gets through it. If he gets through, we're planning on hopefully activating him tomorrow."

Meanwhile, Adrian Gonzalez gets the start at designated hitter on Thursday, in an attempt to let him focus strictly on hitting.

"While we can, we might as well rest his legs a little," said Valentine. "He's such a warrior out there every day. Now, he can just work on his swing, and not have to worry about the great defense he plays every night."
