The original diagnosis of David Ortiz' heel injury -- a sprained Achilles -- was confirmed by a doctor in Miami, and the Red Sox have placed the veteran designated hitter on the 15-day disabled list.
Ortiz went to Miami to get a second opinion on the injury.
Manager Bobby Valentine made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at WEEI Radio. The team will recall Mauro Gomez from Pawtucket as a replacement.
