Valentine: Ortiz doubtful to return Sunday

CLEVELAND - David Ortiz didnt run the bases as originally planned prior to Friday nights game, and Valentine said that the designated hitter was now looking doubtful for a return on Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. It would appear that Ortiz has developed some soreness in the right Achilles after some encouraging progress following his pain-numbing injection earlier in the week.

He felt good today. He didnt do anything, but he felt good. It was a rest day, said Valentine. Hell do more tomorrow. Theyll test it a little bit more tomorrow and hopefully that will be the day that gets him over the hump.

When asked if Valentine still thought Ortiz might be able to go on Sunday as hoped, the Sox skipper replied with: I dont think so.

Ortiz has been out since July 17 after straining the Achilles rounding second base at Fenway Park on a home run ball, and the hope is still that a healthy Big Papi can get into some of the divisional games against the Orioles and Yankees next week.
