Valentine: Beckett ‘pitched plenty good to win a game'

BOSTONJosh Beckett gave the Red Sox just what they needed Wednesday night. After getting pummeled Tuesday night for 18 runs and 21 hits, Beckett quieted the potent Rangers offense, holding them to three runs on seven hits and a walk with a season-high seven strikeouts over seven innings. It wasnt enough, though. While Beckett was calming the Texas bats, Rangers starter Derek Holland was neutralizing the Red Sox offense. Holland went seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts, as the Rangers swept the two-game series, 6-3.Given a two-run lead on Kevin Youkilis first home run of the seasona towering shot into the base of the light tower in left-center scoring David Ortiz, who had doubledBeckett let the Rangers get ahead.Beckett faced six batters in the third. With one out he walked Ian Kinsler, who took third on Elvis Andrus single to left, scoring on Josh Hamiltons. In the fourth, former Sox outfielder David Murphy singled, and Mike Napoli, who is quickly becoming a Sox slayer, belted a two-run home runhis third in the two gamesin the fourth to give the Rangers the lead.Beckett retired the next 12 batters he faced. By that time, it was too late. Holland kept the Sox bats in check, until the Rangers tacked on three more runs in the eighth off Franklin Morales, including a two-run double by Napoli. The Sox got back a run in the ninth. The loss drops Beckett to 1-2, with a 5.03 ERA. He threw a season-high 110 pitches, 68 for strikes.Josh pitched plenty good to win a game, manager Bobby Valentine said. He battled right through seven innings, had his good stuff. Was just missing with his cutter away. Seemed like there were a lot of pitches that were real close out there that could have limited the pitch count. David Murphy hit that ball before Napoli, really reached out and touched it and then 2-0 pitch to Napoli just stayed there.I made one big mistake, Beckett said. The pitch to Napoli and ultimately it was bad for me and bad for the team. I kind of put us in a little bit of a hole. I thought I did well the inning before just minimizing damage and I feel like I did pretty good towards the end.In his career (regular and postseason), Napoli is 6-for-22 (.273) against Beckett, with four of his hits home runs. Napoli has six RBI, a walk, and five strikeouts. Napoli was hitting just .125 before the two-game series, but leaves Fenway Park with a .273 average. The home run off Beckett came on a 2-0, 91-mph fastball.Hes a dangerous hitter, Valentine said. He came in real cold. He was due to get some hits but I didn't expect this many in two games. I would say getting ahead of him would be key and staying away from him would be key.Beckett effectively mixed his pitches and his velocity, which had dipped in his previous start, was back to its normal range. Of his seven strikeouts, all swinging, two were on fastballs, two on cutters, and three on curveballs.I dont think it was anything I was doing, Beckett said. These guys were trying to hit the ball a little harder. I dont know.
