Valentine: Beckett golfing not the best thing

If the rumors are true, it appears as though Josh Beckett has found yet another way to tick off the Red Sox fan base.

According to 98.5 the Sports Hub, Beckett went out for a round of golf last Thursday, just two days before he missed a scheduled start against the Orioles because of back stiffness.

After Beckett's 126-pitch outing last Sunday in Chicago, the Red Sox announced that Beckett's next start would be skipped because he had a sore lat muscle.

It's a development that has predictably become fodder for talk radio stations in town, and Bobby Valentine -- a weekly guest on WEEI -- was forced to answer questions about Beckett's golf game this afternoon.

It was "less than the best thing to do" if Beckett played golf, Valentine said.

Valentine also insisted that Beckett was never "injured" and that missing a start was merely precautionary.

More to come . . .
