Sox call up Repko and Spears, designate Bowden

BOSTON -- A flurry of roster moves took place Sunday morning as the Red Sox look to extend their winning streak to three games.

The Sox purchased the contracts of outfielder Jason Repko and utility man Nate Spears.

The team optioned outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin to Pawtucket.

Boston also designated pitcher Michael Bowden -- to make room for one of the moves on the 25-man roster -- and catcher Luis Exposito.

By designating Exposito and Bowden, the Sox also cleared space on the 40-man roster, clearing room for both Repko and Spears, who had to be added.

The Sox would have liked to have had Repko for Saturday's game, but wanted him to play a game at Pawtucket first to test a contusion in his left leg.

"We had to see him before we could call him up,'' said Bobby Valentine.

Repko is starting in centerfield and batting ninth today against the Rays.

Valentine said the move with Bowden was a difficult one.

"His split was coming,'' said Valentine. "His fastball was developing. I think Mike can pitch at the major league level. But life isn't always fair and timing isn't always what you want it to be.''

Spears, meanwhile, can play some outfield, although Valentine indicated he would be mostly used in the infield.

"I'm more comfortable with him in a few infield positions,'' he said. "But I'm comfortable that he can play seven positions in the field.''
