Sox activate Youkilis, call up Podsednik, place Ross on DL

BALTIMORE -- The Red Sox made a spate of roster moves Tuesday, resulting in a lineup against the Orioles that looks familiar in some ways . . . and very different in others.

As expected, the Red Sox placed Cody Ross (broken foot) on the 15-day disabled list and activated Kevin Youkilis, who had been on the DL because of a back ailment since the beginning of the month. In addition, Scott Podsednik has been summoned from Pawtucket and is with the team at Camden Yards; it's expected that Ryan Sweeney (concussion) will be placed on the new, seven-day DL to make room on the roster.

The Sox will also have to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Podsednik, but several of the players on the 15-day DL -- Daisuke Matsuzaka would be an obvious candidate -- can be moved to the 60-day DL, which would create a roster spot on the 40.

As a result of all the moves, Youkilis will move back to his old position -- first base -- for Tuesday night's game against the Orioles, with Adrian Gonzalez playing right field and Will Middlebrooks staying at third base.

More to come . . .
