Ross injury comes at bad time for Sox

PHILADELPHIA - Outfielder Cody Ross was out of the lineup Saturday night and while manager Bobby Valentine suggested that Ross could be available for a pinch-hitting appearance late in the game, that seemed unlikely, given how pronounced his limp was in the clubhouse.

Ross fouled a ball off his left foot in the eighth inning of Friday's 6-4 loss to the Phillies and didn't take his position in right in the bottom of the inning.

He later went to a local hospital to have x-rays taken on the foot, which proved negative.

Asked if Ross might be a candidate to spend some time on the disabled list, Valentine said: "We'll see how quickly we can get the swelling out. There could be follow-up (x-rays) once the swelling goes down.''

The mishap comes at a bad time for Ross and the Sox, since he was wielding a hot bat of late, with homers in each of his last two games. Over his last three games, Ross was 5-for-9 with two doubles, two homers, three walks and five RBI.

His homer Friday night was his eighth this season, tying him with David Ortiz for the team lead in that department.

With Adrian Gonzalez making a rare start in right Saturday -- opening first base for DH David Ortiz -- the Sox weren't short of outfielders. That will change, of course, once Gonzalez returns to his normal position at first.

If Ross has to go on the DL, there would be a number of options at Pawtucket, with Lars Anderson, Che-Hsuan Lin and Scott Podsednik among the available outfielders.

Lin and Anderson are on the 40-man roster. Podsednik, obtained earlier this month, would have to be added to the 40-man roster before being promoted.
