SEATTLE -- And on the eighth try, they won. Finally.
Snapping an embarrassing week-long losing streak that stretched from southern California to the Pacific Northwest, the Red Sox edged the Seattle Mariners, 4-3, Tuesday, riding two homers to their first win since they left Boston on Aug. 27.
Cody Ross launched a three-run homer to left in the sixth to erase a 3-0 Seattle lead, and three batters later, Ryan Lavanrway clubbed a solo homer to give the Red Sox their latest lead since the first game of the trip when they blew a game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ross's homer was his first in 43 at-bats, dating back to Aug. 23. Lavarnway's, meanwhile, was his first since being promoted from Pawtucket last month.
Jon Lester won for the fourth time in his last five starts, allowing three runs over six innings while pitching in his hometown.
Four relievers followed Lester to the mound: Craig Breslow, Junichi Tazawa, Vicente Padilla and Andrew Bailey, all of whom combined to keep the Mariners scoreless over the final three innings.
After Eric Thames laced a two-out triple to right in the ninth, Bailey got Kyle Seager to fly to right for the final out.
Boston Red Sox
The Mariners had used the long ball themselves in building an early lead against Lester.
Ahead 1-0 in the third, the Mariners got solo homers from Franklin Gutierrez and Kyle Seager to lead off the inning and boost their lead to 3-0.
Seattle managed to put the leadoff man on base against Lester in both the fourth and fifth innings, but couldn't cash in on the opportunity.
The sixth inning, Lester's last, was the only one in which he retired the Mariners in order.
