The Red Sox have already interviewed one candidate to become their fifth pitching coach since the end of 2010, have scheduled another, are trying to reschedule with a third and are seeking permission to interview a fourth.
The Sox met with current Chicago White Sox bullpen coach Juan Nieves Wednesday and are scheduled to meet with Miami Marlins coach Randy St. Claire Thursday.
Nieves, 47 worked as a minor league pitching coach in the White Sox organization for nine seasons and has been on the major league staff as bullpen coach for the last five years.
St. Claire previously worked as a major league coach for the Montreal ExposWashington Nationals before becoming the Marlins' pitching coach three seasons ago.
When manager Ozzie Guillen was fired earlier this month, the remaining coaches were given permission to seek work elsewhere.
Rick Peterson, who has worked as a major league coach with the Mets, A's and Brewers and recently was the minor league pitching coordinator with the Orioles, lives on the Jersey Shore and because of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, is unable to travel.
According to a baseball source, the Sox are in the process of seeking permission to speak to a fourth candidate, but have yet to get that approved.
