Red Sox could focus on ‘slow' pitching market now

NASHVILLE -- Having taken care of their lineup needs with a first baseman and a right fielder in the first two days of the Winter Meetings, the Red Sox are still in search of additional starting pitching.

Unlike the market for position players, however, the pitching market has been slow to develop.

Dan Haren signed a one-year deal with Washington Tuesday for 13 million, which might help set the bar. The Red Sox, like many teams, were concerned about the condition of Haren's hip.

In assessing the pitching market in general, general manager Ben Cherington said: "We'll see. It seems a little bit slower to develop. With Haren off the board, we'll see if that shakes it loose at all."

Among some of the free agents who interest the Red Sox: Kyle Lohse; Brandon McCarthy and Edwin Jackson. The Sox also are said to have an interest in Ryan Dempster, though there are concerns that Dempter, who has pitched almost all of his career in the National League, might have difficulty pitching in the American League East, and specifically, since he's a fly ball pitcher, in Fenway Park.
