Padilla to DL, Mortensen called back up

The Red Sox bullpen took another injury hit before the game Wednesday when right-handed reliever Vicente Padilla was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a biceps injury.

Righthander Clayton Mortensen was recalled from Triple A Pawtucket to take Padilla's spot and was in the clubhouse before the Red Sox took on the Texas Rangers in the series finale at Fenway Park.

Padilla, 34, was 4-1 with a 4.62 ERA in 41 appearances, all in relief. He was signed to a one-year deal in the offseason and had been a somewhat effective setup man for closer Alfredo Aceves, who has filled in all season for the injured Andrew Bailey.

Mortensen pitched effectively in replacing Josh Beckett last week against the Tigers when Beckett left with back spasms.

This latest move makes it 24 players with 28 DL stints for the Red Sox. That's 1,144 games in total missed because of injuries by Red Sox players.
