Ortiz giving sore Achilles another day of rest

BALTMOREDavid Ortiz wont be working out, running or hitting Tuesday night at Camden Yards while giving his sore right Achilles another day of rest in a sign thats not all that encouraging.

Big Papi seemed like he was making good progress after a painkilling shot and had originally hoped to be in the starting lineup last weekend against the Cleveland Indians, but the pain hasnt gone away. He was originally placed on the disabled list on July 17 after straining his Achilles rounding second base, and Ortiz said that doctors told him it would take at least a month to return to the lineup.

It wont be a month until the Sox arrive in the Bronx for a series this weekend against the New York Yankees, and Ortiz is just patiently waiting for things to heal up before jumping back into the lineup.

Tuesday night marks the last day of a three-day period where Ortiz simply rested his sore right foot before moving forward with the rehab process.

Im just sore today, you know? said Ortiz. Im just going to check in with the trainer and see if I feel betterand then see if I can play at some point. This is something I just dont have any patience for.

Dont think were gonna have any activity today.

He clearly doesnt want a repeat of several seasons ago when Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard played on a sore Achilles tendon, and missed a year of baseball after completely blowing it out.

The 36-year-old Ortiz has been sorely missed as he was hitting .316.414.609 over 89 games with 23 home runs and 58 RBIs, but it seems hes hit a little bit of wall in his recovery amid a season that is quickly circling down the drain.
