Not the departure Beckett was looking for

Back spasms in the third inning end a long, strange day for Josh Beckett, the subject of trade rumors before the 4 p.m. deadline Tuesday.

Beckett said the spasms were "not as severe" as the ones he encountered a few years ago at Yankee Stadium that lead to another early exit.

Beckett was greeted by boos as he left the mound at Fenway Park with the training staff and manager Bobby Valentine.

Beckett's reaction to the booing?

"None whatsoever," he said. "It is what it is."

Did he notice it?

"Yeah, you always notice," Beckett said.
