Merloni: I wouldnt' do anything at deadline

While the majority of the experts are telling the Red Sox to hold a fire sale and ship off any piece of value, Lou Merloni plays the lone voice of patience.

"If I'm the Red Sox," says Merloni, "I don't do a damn thing."

The reason?

Lou isn't ready to write off the season and thinks if the Sox can manage to take the next two against the Yankees that they're still in a position to be competitive.

While most would disagree with that, it's hard to argue with Merloni's follow up point:

"If the front end of their rotation was .500, they'd be in the hunt for first."

That's true. But Josh Beckett and Jon Lester haven't even been close to .500 and have shown no indication that they're a 'really good bullpen session' away from turning it around.

Last time we checked, it wasn't the bullpen sessions that were causing trouble for Beckett and Lester. It was those pesky sessions when there are batters.
