McDonald (oblique) to the DL; Gomez called up

BOSTONThe Red Sox disabled list got a little more crowded Sunday morning as Darnell McDonald was placed on the 15-day DL with a right oblique injury.

First baseman Mauro Gomez was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take McDonalds place on the roster.

Jacoby Ellsbury was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room on Red Sox 40-man roster.

Gomez, along with outfielder Jason Repko, was in the Sox clubhouse early Sunday morning, causing speculation that a roster move may be pending involving David Ortiz, who left Fridays game with a sore left heel.

Before the official move was announced, manager Bobby Valentine put that speculation to rest.

Mauros here in case we need to make a roster move, Valentine said. And were waiting on some doctor report to figure out if were going to make a move or not. And thats not with David Ortiz.

Ortiz confirmed his heel was fine.

Repko has been on the DL retroactive to April 21 with shoulder and knee injuries.

Jason Repko's here to have his knee and shoulder looked at to make sure that hes ready to resume play, Valentine said. His shoulder feels real good, his knees getting close.

The roster move was announced after Valentine met with reporters Sunday morning.

McDonald pinch-hit in the seventh inning Friday night for Ortiz and did not play in Saturdays game.
