McAdam: How about Bill Mueller as next Sox manager?

If CSNNE.com Red Sox insider Sean McAdam ran the Red Sox, his choice for manager would be 2004 hero Bill Mueller.

That's what McAdam told Michael Felger Thursday on "Felger & Mazz" on 98.5 The SportsHub. After an initial reluctance to share who his choice would be, McAdam identified Mueller as a "thinking out of the box" pick.

Mueller, the third baseman on the 2004 Red Sox world championship team, is now a special assistant for player development with the Dodgers.

"He has enough distance from his time here," McAdam said. "He's kept active in baseball."

McAdam compared Mueller to a man who has had success this season as a manager without any previous managerial experience, the White Sox's Robin Ventura.

"In a lot of ways he's very similar to Robin Ventura," McAdam said. "Kind of a quiet leader. That's just one name. Kind of outside the box."

McAdam said previous major league managerial experience is overrated.

"The notion that you need previous major league managerial experience should be thrown out the window," he said.
