Lucchino ‘surprised' by Schilling's claim

BOSTON -- The Red Sox aren't expected to release an official statement over Curt Schilling's allegation that a since-departed member of the organization -- someone, according to Schilling, not "in uniform, nor from the baseball ops group" -- urged him to take PEDs as he attempted to recover from a torn rotator cuff and biceps injury in 2008. But team president and CEO Larry Lucchino said he was "surprised" to heat Schilling's tale.

"I'll reserve judgment until I hear a little more," Lucchino told reporters at a Jimmy Fund event Thursday morning. "It's something to look into. But it came from out of left field, to use a baseball cliche."

Craig Calcaterra of NBC's Hardball Talk reported that, according to a source, Major League Baseball will investigate Schilling's claim.
