Lackey to throw batting practice Saturday

BOSTON -- John Lackey is scheduled to throw live batting practice Saturday, a sign that the right-hander -- who's recovering from Tommy John surgery -- is getting close to returning to game action.

"Lackey's been throwing really good in the bullpen," manager Bobby Valentine said before Friday's game. "And now we'll set up some hitters for him tomorrow.

"I don't know if he's totally recovered, but it sure is close. He's really throwing the ball well."

Valentine said he doesn't think Lackey will throw much in the offseason. But that may not be an issue, as he thinks it's possible Lackey may be able to pitch for Boston before this season is over.

"I think he might want to get an inning or two," said Valentine. "That was the original plan. It might be here.

"He's throwing batting practice tomorrow, so I mean, he's close. I have to think he's a couple weeks away from being able to pitch in a game."
