Johnny Pesky dies at age 92

Johnny Pesky, who spent 61 of his 73 years in baseball as a member of the Red Sox organization and was perhaps the greatest good-will ambassador in team history, died Monday of natural causes. He would have turned 93 next month.
The news was first reported by the Boston Herald's Steve Buckley on Twitter and confirmed by CSNNE.com's Maureen Mullen.
Pesky -- who served the Sox as a player, manager, TV analyst, coach, instructor and assistant to the general manager -- was a fixture around Fenway Park for decades, and his affable, outgoing personality made him a beloved figure to generations of fans. His contributions to the team were recognized by ownership in 2008, when they retired his number (6) . . . the first and only non-Hall of Famer to have his number retired by the Red Sox.
