Gomes: Red Sox bringing in ‘championship-caliber players'

BOSTONIn his first wintertime trip to Boston, Jonny Gomes got a dose of the citys coldest weather in quite some time.It definitely wasnt hot by any means, Gomes said Thursday before the annual dinner of the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. I havent been here in the winter ever. I dont even know Boston as this. I know it as the nice summer days.Gomes knows Boston and Fenway Park from visits over his 10-season career with the Rays, Reds, Nationals, and As.My first time here was in 2003, he said. Many battles here at Fenway and of course on the road. I guess you could say Im pretty educated with what its like here. Obviously, Im a player, but Im a big fan of the game, a student of the game as well. So Im pretty educated with Boston. So nothings caught me too much off guard.Gomes joined the Sox on a two-year, 10 million contract in December. He is satisfied with how the Sox roster is shaping up this offseason.I look at it a little differently, he said. Im sure manager John Farrell and general manager Ben Cherington kind of think the same. I think the first thing, outside of stats, sabermetrics, if you will, because I think you look at the game so much different when the lights are off than you do when the lights are on. I always look at the game when the lights are on. So many things make sense when the lights are off and you try them in the season and in the game, it doesnt work. But as far as the guys that came in, I would consider all ballplayers and I love to surround myself with ballplayers. Someone who you know youre going to get 100 percent, someone you know plays the game right, and doesnt take for granted being in the big leagues and being between the lines. With that being said, at the same time theyre championship-caliber players. And they have championships on their resume. Mike Napoli coming from Texas, Shane Victorino coming from the National League, Ryan Dempster coming from the National League, got a little taste of the American league. So were getting a little piece of pie from everybody.Gomes, who turned 32 in November, was the Rays 18th-round pick in 2001. One of the high-character players the Sox have brought in this offseason, he was signed to play left field. How many games he plays there remains to be seen. He knows that is not in his control. But there is something he can control.Well I have a number in mind of games I want to be ready for and thats 162, said Victorino, who appeared in 99 games for the As last season, with 25 starts in left field and three in right. And that starts from my first day in the big leagues. I dont make the lineup, I dont want to make the lineup, as far as writing it. But what I do want to be is be ready. I work very hard in the offseason to condition myself to be ready for 162. My number one goal is to be healthy and to be in shape to play 162. I think I am again.
