Cherington on Ross: ‘Door will remain open'

BOSTONBen Cherington said getting David Ortiz signed to a new deal was the first free agent priority.

Next among the team's own free agents: outfielder Cody Ross.

The Sox didn't extend a qualifying offer to Ross before last Friday's deadline.

Ross has a lot of interest on the market, with the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Philadelphia Philies and Atlanta Braves all potential suitors.

"We've had a number of conversations (with Ross), obviously," said Cherington. "The door will remain open and we'll continue to talk, but obviously, once you're in free agency, he's got opportunities to talk to other teams and I fully expect him to do that."

When Cherington signed Ross last winter, he told Ross "that having a good season with the Red Sox in 2012 would position him well for the free agent market.

Ross's swing proved perfect for Fenway, as he led the Sox in RBI with 81 despite missing a month with a broken bone in his foot. He also compiled a 1.010 OPS against left-handed pitching.

"The good news is (Ross had that good season)," said Cherington, "and that's to his credit. He's in a good position now, but it makes it tougher to sign him so we'll keep the door open, we'll keep talking. But at the same time, we got to consider alternatives now that we're in free agency."
