Cherington: Can't just hope it'll get better

BOSTONJust 14 games into the season, the Red Sox very likely suffered what could be their most demoralizing loss of the season.

The Red Sox bullpen managed to turn what should have been a comfortable eight-run lead in the seventh inning into a 15-9 loss, stretching the teams losing streak to five games.

After meeting with the media immediately following the game, manager Bobby Valentine met behind closed doors in his office with principal owner John Henry, president Larry Lucchino, and general manager Ben Cherington.

Tough loss, and as theyve done in the past theyve come down after a tough loss, and just an opportunity just to talk and remind each other were in this together, Cherington said. During the course of the conversation, sure theres different things that are talked about and options that we might have to get better -- and obviously those will stay behind closed doors -- but it was a good chance to catch up and a good productive conversation. And more than anything just to sort of be in the room and talk about sticking through this together and getting better together.

Despite the teams poor on-field performance, Cherington said he is satisfied with the job Valentine is doing.

Very satisfied, Cherington said. He makes the lineup out and he makes decisions during the game as to whos coming in. The players will always influence wins and losses more than anybody else, and thats no different here. Hes doing the best he can with the roster he has. Itll get better, and he knows that and I know that. And along the way, if changes need to be made on the roster, thats my responsibility.

What kind of changes could be made?

Well, were 4-10 and our pitching performance hasnt been good so you got to, you cant just hope things are going to get better, Cherington said. You have to look at it obviously and try to find ways to improve it. So sure when things arent going well you got to look at it closer. Theres more urgency to find ways to make it improve. But again theres more than one way to do that. We got to look at all the ways.
