Beckett (thumb) may miss first start of season

FORT MYERS, Fla.Josh Becket is on his way to San Antonio to have his thumb examined and may not be able to pitch the second game of the season as scheduled.

Alfredo Aceves said he has been told to be ready to pitch the second game against the Tigers as well as the home opener, if Beckett is not able to pitch.

Red Sox media relations director Pam Ganley confirmed that Beckett is not in camp today and was on his way to San Antonio.

Manager Bobby Valentine is scheduled to meet with the media at 11 a.m. and should be able to provide more information.
