Beckett glad he was ‘overruled' and placed on DL

BOSTON -- Josh Beckett didn't want to go on the disabled list; in fact, he didn't even want to miss a start.

But, in retrospect, he's glad he listen to the doctors.

"I got overruled, and it's probably smart," he said Tuesday in his first public comments since being placed on the disabled list because of right shoulder inflammation. "I'm definitely not ready for my career to be over."

Beckett said in addition to the inflammation, he was also losing strength in his shoulder. "When you start getting inflammation plus strength limitations, that's when you tend to do something catastrophic," he added.

The right-hander had an MRI on his shoulder Monday and said "everything looks pretty good". He's eligible to come off the DL June 26, and says he'll be ready to pitch when he does.

"I had some pain I was dealing with in my shoulder," Beckett said. "It's stuff I've dealt with before . . . and I thought I could get through it. The things we did Monday, we were planning on doing right before the All-Star break.

"I thought I could get through two more starts and then possibly miss the last one before the break. But I kind of got overruled on that deal, the way my strength was going."
