Beckett better, but far from good against Yankees

NEW YORK -- It was far from his worst start of the season, but, as Josh Beckett himself is fond of saying, it didn't yield the desired result.

As a matter of fact, it resulted in a pretty predictable result: a Red Sox loss. Beckett allowed all four runs in a 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees Sunday, dropping the team's records in games he's started this season to 7-14.

"It's a work in progress, I guess," shrugged Beckett. "Still (lousy) results. I've got to keep working. The good thing I have right now is health and we'll move forward with that. Some things were better today, but it's still the same (lousy) results."

Beckett was roughed by Derek Jeter (three hits including two doubles, two runs scored) and Ichiro Suzuki (two solo homers).

"I made some bad pitches to two guys," said Beckett, 5-11, who has won only once since May 20. "I made some good pitches when I needed to, then didn't make good pitches at other times. The Ichiro home runs were on fastballs. Both of them I left up. I think sometimes, a lot of his hits off me have been pitches where they're balls and he turns them into hits because he has such great plate coverage.

"That wasn't the case today."
