Anderson to debut in left field for Sox

CHICAGO -- With Cody Ross still battling some soreness in his left knee from Wednesday night, Bobby Valentine has Lars Anderson making his first major league start in the outfield in left field for the opener of a four game series with the White Sox.
"We'll give his knee a day,'' said Valentine. "I think we'll be able to use him (as a pinch hitter if necessary). He came in and we talked. If tomorrow was an off-day, he'd probably play (Thursday night), but it's not an off-day, so...
"There's no need to make anything worse. We'll see if we can put a small issue in the rear-view mirror.''
Anderson played four games in the outfield while at Pawtucket before being called up to Boston last weekend and handled all three chances without incident.
"I've watched him now for four days,'' said Valentine. "He's good off the fungo. The reports on him (at Pawtucket) are that he caught everything that was hit to him. We'll see. He hasn't been challenged and I would say that the wind and the big league hitters will challenge him a little more than he's challenged before.''
