Yaz statue unveiled outside Fenway Park

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox honored Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski with a statue that was unveiled outside the right field entrance of Fenway Park on Sunday morning. Yastrzemski threw out the first pitch before today's game with the Blue Jays. 

Former teammates who participated in the ceremony included Hall of Famer Jim Rice, outfielder Dwight Evans, and pitchers Bill Lee and Luis Tiant. Current Red Sox players Dustin Pedroia, Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava and manager John Farrell were also on hand.

Mayor Tom Menino proclaimed it "Carl Yastrzemski Day for the city of Boston."

During the 30-minute ceremony, the team unveiled a statue of Yaz tipping his cap after his final at-bat in 1983.

He is the all-time Red Sox leader in games played, with 3,308, runs (1,816), hits (3.419), and RBI (1,844). was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
