There has been a lot of talk about Jacoby Ellsbury's impending free agency, but don't forget that catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is also a free agent after the season.

The Baseball Show panel discussed Salty's impending free agony, and talked about potential ways the Red Sox could keep the 28-year-old catcher in Boston.

"If the Red Sox were to offer Salty a qualifying offer, would that be it? Personally, I think that might be." said Lou Merloni, "The Red Sox might want to dangle the carrot a little bit, and give him a multi-year deal… These compensation picks.  (Teams) don't want to give up these first round draft picks.  You got to be a special player in order for these teams to give up the twelfth pick overall.  Does Salty fall in that category?  I don't think he does."

Sean McAdam brought up the fact that the Red Sox have a couple prospects who could potentially impact whether or not the Red Sox make a long term commitment to Saltalamacchia.

"With Swihart and Vazquez on the horizon, I think they would be reluctant to get into any sort of long-term commitment to Salty." said Red Sox Insider Sean McAdam, "I could see a two-year deal, maybe a two (year) and an option.  I don't really see them going as far as three years with him knowing what they have coming up through the system."
