To the surprise of no one, John Farrell announced this afternoon that Jon Lester will be the Red Sox' Game 1 starter in the World Series, which begins Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
Lester was also the Game 1 starter in the ALDS (beating Tampa Bay, 12-2) and the ALCS (losing 1-0 to Detroit). He is 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA in this year's postseason -- he was the winning pitcher in Game 5 of the ALCS in Detroit -- and, in his career, is 4-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 11 postseason games. He won his only World Series start in 2007, beating the Rockies in the Game 4 clincher.
He's pitched once against the Cardinals in his career, but the experience won't do him much good Wednesday. It was on June 22, 2008 -- he allowed 2 runs over 7 2/3 innings in an eventual 13-inning Red Sox vicrory -- and the only player from that lineup still with St. Louis is catcher Yadier Molina.
