LOS ANGELES —-  The Red Sox activated lefty Matt Thornton (oblique) from the DL and optioned Brayan Villarreal back to Pawtucket.

The good news is that gives John Farrell four lefties from which to choose in the bullpen. The bad news? He has just three righties in the seven-man pen.

"It'll be a first, to have that number of (lefties)," said Farrell. "I feel like we have length with Franklin (Morales), but just the fact that we get Thornton back active. That's the biggest bonus of this right now."

Thornton was 0-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 10 games with the team before he went on the DL August with a right oblique strain.
