Now that the baseball pennant races are heading into the home stretch, we'll be here each weekday with a wrapup of the previous night's action. Here's what happened on Sunday, September 8:

A.L. EAST: Red Sox (87-58) lead Rays (78-64) by 7 1/2 games

A.L. WEST: A's (83-60) lead Rangers (81-61) by 1 1/2 games

  • A's 7, Astros 2: Gotta love the sight of those 'Stros when you're playing crucial September games. Right, Bartolo Colon? (AP)

  • Rangers 4, Angels 3: Texas, on the other hand, had to rally to avoid a three-game sweep in Anaheim . . . but rally the Rangers did. (AP)

A.L. WILD CARD: Rangers and Rays hold top two spots; Indians (76-66, 2 games behind Tampa Bay), Orioles (76-66, 2 games back), Yankees (76-67, 2 1/2 games back) and Royals (75-68, 3 1/2 games back) in the hunt

N.L. CENTRAL/WILD CARD: Cardinals (83-60) lead Pirates (81-61) and Reds (82-62) by 1 1/2 games each
