LOS ANGELES -- It had been assumed that David Ortiz would be back in the lineup Sunday night, even with the presence of lefty starter Chris Capuano.
But instead, manager John Farrell opted to go with Mike Napoli at first with Ortiz on the bench in the road trip finale.
"I looked at this portion of the schedule through National League parks as a chance to get as many of our positions players a number of days' rest," said Farrell. "Obviously, David was available (Saturday) and he's available today. Mike coming off a week in which we was getting over the foot thing, but it still allowed him to regroup. Stephen (Drew off) tonight, with the off-day (Monday) as well.
"Going forward, our main guys are going to be leaned on daily as we go through the rest of the schedule. It was a chance to balance that out for the rest of the trip. We're looking to take advantage of the schedule whenever we can and yet not compromise our ability to compete on a daily basis."
